Motoring through Edgewater (Past)

The current exhibit at the EHS Museum, Motoring through Edgewater, explores the history of how the automobile transformed the Edgewater neighborhood. The exhibit runs until May 3, 2015, and features photographs, maps and other artifacts from the museum’s collection. Related programs will be offered during the exhibit.

In the 1920s, Edgewater became a center for automotive sales and service, with numerous dealerships, garages and parts sellers located along Broadway. The neighborhood was so densely populated with automobile-related businesses that it was dubbed the “North Side Motor Row” by industry experts. [more...]

Cook County HospitalThe next meeting of the Chicago History Book Club will be Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Edgewater Branch of the Chicago Public Library. The books to be discussed are “Hospital: An Oral History of Cook County Hospital” by Sydney Lewis (New Press, 1995) and “County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago’s Public Hospital” by David A. Those Were the Days Radio Players (Past)

Relive the Golden Age of radio drama with “Those Were the Days Radio Players” - Chicago North chapter. On Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the EHS Museum, the Radio Players will perform two programs:

Fibber McGee and Molly: Fibber meets a Racketeer was originally broadcast on October 28, 1941, with the husband and wife team of Jim Jordan and Marian Driscoll Jordan playing Fibber and Molly. The radio series ran from 1935 until 1956.

The Shadow: The Horror in the Night was originally broadcast April 25, 1954, with Bret Morrison as The Shadow (Lamont Cranston) and Gertrude Warner as Margo Lane. The radio series ran from 1937 until 1954.

In the early 20th Century, Chicago was a national hub of automobile commerce – home to the country’s largest concentration of car and truck dealers along South Michigan Avenue’s Motor Row. Smaller hubs flourished in neighborhoods, including Edgewater, which was home to the North Side Motor Row. Join Preservation Chicago’s Erica Ruggiero on a photo tour of these, sometimes grand, remnants of automobile commerce – back when cars and trucks were new and everyone was buying.
