Gulzar Suteria

Gulzar Suteria lived in Qatar for twenty years before coming to the U.S. Her concern for the youth of the Edgewater community and need for cross cultural and religious understanding made her a magnet for programs dedicated to those efforts.
In 2015 she became involved with ECRA (Edgewater Community Religious Association) and the Ismaili Center, which led to many other programs, such as Clean and Green, Edgewater’s annual Thanksgiving multireligious celebration, and summer gardening internships. At that time Gulzar reached out to Sacred Heart School to form a lasting relationship based on religious understanding.
She became increasingly involved in programs for seniors as well as a powerful force in the refugee community welcoming newcomers directing them toward programs that meet their needs. On a personal level, she has accompanied many of them to government interviews. It is a matter of pride that so many of them have found a home in Edgewater. She makes everyone feel welcome and valued. Truly Gulzar lives her faith through her actions every day.

“Everybody has something to give back to the community…
It is just like a piece of soul I have with me, as I do the best as
I can for my own people, my society, my community.”
