Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan was the longest serving legislative leader in American history before he was convicted on federal corruption charges and sentenced to prison last year. Retired Chicago Tribune reporter Ray Long covered Madigan for over 40 years, from the Illinois Capitol to his federal trial, and drew on his experience for his recent book “The House That Madigan Built: The Record Run of Illinois’ Velvet Hammer.” In a 45-year career, Long developed a reputation for holding politicians accountable, revealing government secrets, exposing pork-barrel politics, and uncovering loopholes that favor politicians.
