Historic Sites

General Information

The term “historic sites” as used here is a general one and covers those sites that carry some official designation as well as those not so designated that the Edgewater Historical Society considers important enough to warrant consideration for preservation.

In the official category, are the following:

Listing on the National Register of Historic Places, either as an individual structure or as a contributing structure in a historic district.

Designation as a City of Chicago Landmark, either as an individual structure or a contributing structure in an historical district

Designation as an orange-rated structure in the City of Chicago’s survey of Chicago’s structures.

Only designation as a City Landmark or as a contributing structure in a City Landmark district offers any protection for the structure against demolition or “re-muddling” or imposes any limitations on what owners can do with their property. Listing on the National Register does not offer any protection nor does it imposes any limitations. Nor does designation as “orange-rated” on the City of Chicago survey. The only impact for owners of orange-rated structures is that there is an “up to” 90 day delay in the issuance of a demolition permit. This to allow staff of the City of Chicago’s Landmark Commission to assess whether the orange-rated, potential Landmark merits recommendation to the Commission for preliminary status as a City Landmark. In the majority of cases, when a demolition application has been submitted for an orange rated structure, a demolition permit has been granted, and the building has been demolished.
