The American Contractor database of Chicago building permits (1898 thru 1912) was created from the magazine, which printed these permits within 7 business days of their issuance by the Chicago building department. It was done by hand transcribing what was printed into a digital format. Given this process, errors could be made, and errors were made.
The data that was corrected or added is shown in italics with an explanation in the Notes column.
To enable accurate sequencing by address, for any street, a new column was created in which just the street name was entered. The original listing on the left showed some streets as “av” and others “st.” Sorting on this original column would have created a distortion in that sorting that column for any street would would list the street name first by “av” then by “st.”
For buildings for J. L. Cochran, the last of which was in 1904, the old street numbers were converted to the current numbers based on the 1909 conversion table. The new numbers were placed on a separate column to the right. Sorting was done on the new street column and this column of current address numbers.
