And now a word about Barrel jumping, the original extreme sport. Richard Widmark, an early skater at the Peirce Skating Club was intrigued by barrel jumping and after his stint in the Navy he tried the sport. He won two barrel jumping championships at the Master National and the North American and Master International championships. By 1960 Widmark had moved to the suburbs and started a barrel jumping act- the Barrel Busters with Chicagoan Jim Campbell also from Peirce. In 2012 Richard Widmark was inducted into the Northbrook Sports Hall of Fame for his speed skating, barrel jumping and cycling.
