Tuesday Bike Rides and Local Edgewater History (Past)

Go EdgewaterWant to ride your bike and get some exercise and local history at the same time?

EHS is again supporting the GO EDGEWATER summer program in the evening bike rides every Tuesday, usually at 6:15 under the Thorndale “L”. The topics for the remaining tours are listed below. Check below for exact location and time.

On Tuesday, August 9th we will ride around the boundaries of Edgewater. Meet at 6:15 p.m. under the Thorndale “L” station.

The first tour took in the contours of the original Edgewater Beach Hotel site and later lakefills, Edgewater Beach Apartments, the original sea wall and then back for a refreshments reception at the museum for our exhibit on the EBH opening centennial. Next we went to the new West Ridge Nature Preserve (adjacent to Rosehill Cemetery) for an informative narrative from Tom Murphy. And on July 5th we gathered mulberries at the Colvin Mansion, Berger Park and finally to the fabulous 6018 North gallery where we were treated to a demonstration on sorting and preserving mulberries and how well they go with ice cream (or vodka?) compliments of the gallery staff who took us through their wonderful exhibits. Tom Murphy took us on a great scientific tour of restored natural areas and preserved sand dunes on July 19th, and to local breweries on July 26th. On August 2nd we visited Green establishments and Loyola‘s Institute for Environmental Sustainability, ending at Uncommon Ground. On the way we saw Chicago’s oldest sidewalks, preserved in Edgewater.
