Lincoln Bicentenary

Vol. XIX No. 3 - FALL 2008

2009 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Because Lincoln came from Illinois and served as an Illinois legislator and U.S. Representative from our state before his election as the 16th President of the United States, there is a lot of information about Lincoln available. The Chicago History Museum will have an exhibit featuring Lincoln and it will have many interesting things to present. The Edgewater Historical Society Museum would like to participate in honoring Lincoln with a small exhibit and a program about him. Bob Remer is digging through his archives for pertinent materials. We will have one display case with a tribute to Lincoln.

The big question is: “Did Abraham Lincoln ever visit Edgewater/Andersonville?” There is a story that has gone around for years that he stopped at the Kransz house during his 1860 campaign. We have no evidence that this is true.
